Book a roomWhere Bavaria’s diocese began
On Freising Cathedral Hill, high above the Isar, the first church of St Mary of today’s diocese already stood around 715. In 739 Boniface raised it to a bishop’s church. Around 860 Bishop Anno built a three-aisled cathedral, which was renewed after a fire in 903.
Today’s cathedral, a five-aisled building with a twin-tower façade, is of Romanesque origin. Construction of the new building began in 1159. From outside it looks plain; inside it is worth a look.
