How the tour runs
From Lustheim the route crosses the Fröttmaning heath to the Allianz Arena. With 75,000 seats and its illuminated outer shell, it is the home of FC Bayern München. The path continues into the idyllic Isar floodplain and along the Isar cycle path to the English Garden.
The English Garden is one of the largest urban parks in the world and even bigger than Central Park in New York. Bavarian beer gardens, the Kleinhesseloher See and the famous Monopteros with its panoramic view are waiting here.
At the southern tip of the park lies the Residenz. From 1508 it was the seat of the dukes, electors and kings of Bavaria; as the largest city-centre palace in Germany it houses one of the most important palace museums in Europe. Through the Hofgarten you reach the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz, where the Hitler Putsch was put down in 1923.
Then on to two Munich originals: past Marienplatz with its famous glockenspiel you reach the Viktualienmarkt. Between the fountains of Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt it is a pleasure to stroll and enjoy.
The way back from Odeonsplatz is by U6 towards Garching as far as Fröttmaning, and from there across the heath to us.
